Members of the Anglican Chorale are diverse in their interest and their experience. The youngest
members have been as young as 9 years of age (trebles) and the oldest are well-seasoned singers. They sing in church choirs, university choirs, community choirs, pick-up choirs. They sing anywhere with the slightest suggestion.
ACO members elect an Organizing Committee at each General Meeting. The Organizing Committee members are themselves singers known also for their administrative prowess and good nature.
Some members of the ACO have professional musical training, some do not. All have a love of the Anglican liturgical literature and put their heart, as well as their voice, into making a joyful noise
Over the years the ACO has evolved a reasonably systematic two-step process to select new choristers to join a choir whose number is limited at least partly by the size of the choir stalls in British cathedrals.
Today we look for strong singers with above average sight reading skills who also relish searching ancient castle turrets for toilet facilities at dead of night and who remain cheerful in the face of the challenges that inevitably arise to test the resolve of a touring choir.
The Chorale sings quite a lot of Anglican chant, so an Anglican music background is helpful, although this is not a requirement.
The first step for prospective members is normally an audition, unless the singer is already known to the Director through membership of another choir that he directs. For the audition you will be asked to sing scales (so that the Director can determine your range and pitc
h accuracy), to sight read a psalm, and a portion of one of our anthems, as well as to sing a prepared piece of your own choosing.
If you pass the audition, you will then be interviewed by two members of the organizing team who will discuss with you the commitment involved in being a choir member, the costs of taking part, the up-coming rehearsal schedule and the itinerary of our next overseas tour. You will also have an opportunity to raise any questions you may have about the choir and how it works.
Auditions take place at Christ Church Cathedral in
We are proud that, over the years, our choir has included members of all ages, including choristers as young as nine years old. However, the composition of the choir varies from season to season depending on such considerations as the type of music we will be singing and the schedule demands we will be facing on each upcoming trip.
At present, we are not auditioning children for membership in the choir, but have instead been focusing our most recent recruiting efforts on young adult singers, several of whom are already making substantial and welcome contributions to the choir.
